There are sustainable, biodegradable and natural fibre based products available that make living sustainably a breeze. It can be a simple case of swapping the same non environmentally friendly product straight over to an eco-friendly version. Bamboo toothbrushes are examples of exactly that. A straight swap with the exact same functionality, only they're sustainable - a great solution to the otherwise plastic toothbrush.
The easiest switch you can make to start living a sustainable lifestyle is to change to using bamboo toothbrush. Bamboo is obviously a plant based, biodegradable material, as opposed to the hard, moulded plastic toothbrushes people traditionally buy from the store which aren’t biodegradable or even recyclable. Hence the bamboo toothbrushes are a great eco-friendly alternative to choose instead.
Plastic toothbrushes are near impossible to breakdown, and they’re presence on this earth will be felt for hundreds, if not thousands of years. As with any plastic they shed micro-plastic and leach toxins, so are detrimental to the health of ourselves and the health of the planet. Plastic toothbrushes also come packaged in plastic which adds insult to injury. Thankfully the bamboo toothbrush is available to choose instead.
Bamboo is considered sustainable for a number of reasons, firstly because of its ability to grow quickly without the need for fertilisers or pesticides. Some species can grow 3-4 feet in a day and can mature within seven years. Compared to other species (which can take 30-50years!) this makes it a very attractive plant for faster productions. Deforestation isn’t an issue with bamboo harvest because of this fast growth cycle. It is a hardy plant and makes for a very durable wood. It doesn’t require a lot of water for growth and its fast-growing nature provides stability in soil conditions, reducing the likelihood of erosion.
The handle of the toothbrush can be discarded into a composting bin and will break down naturally as any plant-based material would. The bristles of the bamboo toothbrush are generally made from a BPA free polymer, which aren’t biodegradable – this is the only drawback for these toothbrushes. They are resistant to microbial growth whilst you use the toothbrush, however they will need to be cut off from the toothbrush before you go to discard them. In defence of the bamboo toothbrush there currently isn’t any alternative for the bristles that are biodegradable – making this toothbrush the most environmentally friendly option on the market.
Onist stocks the Environmental Toothbrush range – which offers both a normal bristled toothbrushes and toothbrushes with bristles enhanced with bamboo charcoal. The toothbrushes enhanced with bamboo charcoal offer an extra level of bacteria fighting protection by containing charcoal reactive ions.. This keeps the toothbrush that much cleaner in between brushes.
We recommend thoroughly rinsing and then drying the toothbrushes after use, this will extend the life of the toothbrush. The more you can keep the toothbrush moisture free between brushes the longer it will last. Generally, toothbrushes need to be replaced every 2-3 months depending on how it’s used and maintained.
Toothbrushes can be purchased in singly, in packs of 2 or 4, or in boxes of 12. The boxes are biodegradable, and can be added to your compost or recycled in your recycling bin.
